Question: What Does Deadpool Mean for the X-Men Saga?

Without a doubt, 2016’s hail mary Deadpool was a surprise in every way. Fox tried for years to keep it from getting made until some test footage leaked and blew fans away. Because of that, Deadpool finally got made but was released in February to avoid a lot of attention in case it was bad (it would be easier to bury and forget). Well, the film amazed fans, critics, and smashed many box office records, even warranting at least one sequel thus far! Since the X-Men saga is sputtering its way past the finish line, what does Deadpool‘s success mean for the future of the X-Men film series?

To further explain, let’s take a look back at the history of the series: between 2000 and 2006, the original trilogy was released with X-Men, X2and The Last StandAfter that, the Wolverine trilogy began with Origins in 2009, continued with The Wolverine in 2013 and will end with Logan in just a few weeks. Furthermore, the Beginnings trilogy began in 2011 with First Classexpanded all trilogies in 2014 with Days of Future Pastand concluded just this last year with ApocalypseAlthough that film allowed for more films to be made in the future following even younger versions of the same characters from the original trilogy, the future of that new trilogy seems dim. However, Deadpool did extremely well in every way; so, will the X-Men franchise continue because of this new path, or will Deadpool go in a completely different direction, separate from the other films?

I think that it should be its own entity entirely, as the tone does not fit the rest of the films. The rest of the franchise already has enough problems with continuity, story, characters and tone that I don’t need Deadpool to further mess things up at all; the X-Men films are great (usually) on their own, but they do not work well together at all in a consistent franchise. There is no single story thread that connects them. The trilogies get in each others’ ways yet they cannot stand well on their own without the other films to back them up or expand on important plot points that they all share. Deadpool, on the other hand, does not have any of these ties and more seems to spoof a lot of what the X-Men series has as it is very referential and comedic, which is something the other films are not at all.

Could Fox blend the two franchises, or will the two remain separate from each other and exist without any interaction? What do you think? You can read more about my thoughts on the X-Men film series in my blog post about the right way to watch them, here! Anyways, those are my brief thoughts, I’d love to hear yours! As always, thanks for reading and I’ll see you soon!
